Off the coast of Scotland, scattered across the North Sea, the oil platforms are a man’s world. There, they leave for several months without touching land, test their endurance, risk their lives and amass a nice nest egg. Tabitha Lasley decides to investigate this world which is forbidden to her and goes to Aberdeen to meet those who come back from these stays at sea. The young journalist wants to know what men are like when they only live with each other.
But her subject slips away. During her interviews, where the men tell their virile mythology, Tabitha takes on, in spite of herself, the role of the one who stays on land and waits, the gentle presence who listens, the idealized icon of which one dreams. And here she is soon re-enacting the eternal story of the woman who scans the open sea while waiting for the man who has gone to sea...
