The escape of a rebellious young girl from the puritanical sect in which she was raised. A powerful novel about emancipation.

“Ici-Bas” is where Rosie Lane lives, caught between the flogging sessions imposed by Ambriel, the sect’s guru, and the passion that binds her to Gabe, her childhood love. When Gabe submits to the sect’s rules and agrees to marry another girl, Rosie flees to London, le "Grand Extérieur".

Set in contemporary England, Rosie quickly discovers the fast-paced life of the modern world. She becomes a waitress in a pub called the Sunday Morning, where she is introduced to music, freedom, and… the flipside of it all. Struggling with exhausting and sometimes grim living conditions, she finds solace in reading Emily Dickinson’s poetry and listening obsessively to Nick Cave and Joy Division. Along the way, she encounters several men, but none can truly satisfy her yearning for love and freedom.

Sunday Morning stands in the tradition of Wuthering Heights, Jane Austen’s novels, and Jeanette Winterson’s acclaimed Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?, works that recount the challenging journey from symbolic or literal servitude to emancipation.
